Taking a Breather....

So before I get to my next adventure (and the one I'll have to write about after tonight's new adventure), I want to take a moment to reassess some of the things I'm changing in my life.

I started the journey of my Second Master's degree this time last year. About a month after I moved home, I started my first class. I can't believe a year has gone by already! Craziness. SO much has happened in this year. Good, Bad, and TERRIBLE. And I do mean Terrible. But nonetheless - I'm still walking/standing and on good terms with my body. That being said - here's a few changes I'm undertaking:

1. Originally I was signed up for 3 summer classes this year. This has since been changed. I am now only taking 1 summer class. My sanity, healthy, and social life will thank me at some point in July :-). I have to prep for two praxis exams and I have a job at a swim club that are both going to take a lot of my time. Plus - this gives me more free time to work (read:make money). YESSSSSS!

2. I am signing up for both the ING Rock n' Roll Half Marathon (formerly the Philly Distance Run) in September and the Philly Half Marathon in November. I know I felt as thought I never wanted to run again - but I think if I just approach it with a better attitude (read: not worry about how fast I go) - I'll enjoy it much more. Plus - I like running. I feel good when I do it.

3. As soon as my bike is back - I'm planning on riding outside. See #1 - yeah - I'll have more free time to ride too - YAY!

4. I'm hoping with more money making, to keep saving to move out of my mom's house. As nice as it's been to be rent free, I really miss not having my own place/space to come home to. I'm really ready to have my own stuff and decorate and leave the dishes in the sink if I want to.

5. Obviously the dating has been a big change for me - but I'm trying to keep my options open. I have a few more logs on the fire - none set in stone but we'll see. Wait till I get to the adventure about the guy from my English class :-) hehe!

6. I'm seriously thinking about doing P90X. Last week I was kind of like - bleh - but - I have a few friends that have the DVDS - maybe they'll let me burn them and then do the workouts?

7. I really want to start reading for pleasure again. I miss it. Hopefully I'll get to do that this summer now that I don't have so many classes to take.

8. I'm expecting some major refundage from my dropping two classes and waiting for the refund from Montco from the class I dropped earlier this year. This money will help with bill paying and other fun times ahead - read: travel! Yay :-)

9. I really need to start eating better - I'm thinking of going completely veggie for the summer. I mean - not even fish. That'll be hard because of how much I love sushi but I think it could be good for me.

10. I need to stop and take time and breathe every once in a while! DON'T FORGET TO DO THAT!

muah! until the next adventure:-)

A New Year - A New Perspective?

So often we find ourselves ringing in the new year telling ourselves, "This year will be different. This year I'm really going to do the things I set for myself as goals." Usually it's like that or something along those lines.

Here's the truth. I do this EVERY year. Sometimes, I accomplish them. More often than not, though.....I don't.

I'm starting over this year. I know I know. Everyone says that. It's January 1. Of course you're starting over. But you know, I really am.

This blog has always served a purpose for myself to basically whine to "no one" about the things going on in my life. I say "no one" even though I know a few of my friends read this on occasion. But my friends already know these things about me. That's why they're my friends.

From this point forward, I'm using this space to talk about the crazy things my mother does while I'm here at home (thank god it'll only be for a short period of time...a special post about living with your mother is yet to come!). It'll be about the choices I decide to make while I'm struggling to figure out what it is I want exactly in my life. It'll be about my constant desire to want to be healthy (read: skinny) and my struggle to know that I'll never be a super model nor will I ever look like one. Basically, It'll be about me - but in a less whiny manner.

I hope to amuse (first and foremost) and of course reflect on my life. I've been through a lot in the 28 years I've lived on this place we call Earth, but my goodness do I still feel like I have SO much to learn.

Shall I start with my supposed 2K10 RESOLUTIONS? (k, but don't hold your breadth...let's just say, if I can accomplish 1/3 of this list, I'll totally be thrilled)

1. Visit friends more/Be better at Keeping in Touch
2. Take a big trip to Europe
3. Finish Grad School
4. Get a head coaching job
5. Read more often
6. Help/Volunteer/Donate my time more
7. Make RTF Golf Outing awesome!
8. Write more
(Exercise goals)
1. Eat Clean
2. Eliminate Sugar
3. Run a Marathon
4. Get Six Pack Abs (haha)
5. Get my Spinning Certification
6. Get my training Certification
7. Work with a trainer
8. Ride with a Team

So I guess that's about it for now. There are more - but the "more" is really just on my Bucket List of life.

I think I can do almost all of these things this year. We'll see next January 1.

"You are not as fat as you imagine"

While this is true....I still feel pretty fat these days. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I didn't really eat very well and drank a lot more often than I normally do. Well, it was the holidays - and I'm sure it's not as bad as I think it is....I mean, all my clothes still fit - so it can't be that bad right?

I did measure my BMI on our Wii Fit tonight - which is where this "rant" came from. Now granted - I'm in the normal zone - I'm like JUST on the cusp of being overweight. Of course, it doesn't measure how much muscle I have(which I know is quite a bit), and therefore, isn't entirely accurate. I mean, we all know, if you try to measure BMI of super toned people, it says they're overweight because muscle is more compact than fat and yada yada yada....you know the rest. That being said...I'm aware that I'm not a body builder...and yes..I totally want to lose weight...I'm always trying to do that. But for the time being - all I can do is be healthy. I know the weight doesn't come off overnight..but there are things I know I can do to actually lose weight.

That being said - I do have some resolutions for myself this year...and like most people...losing a few pounds is one of them. In no particular order my fitness goals for 2009 are:

1. Get back on a regular lifting schedule - I kind of dropped off on my lifting in the spring last year - mainly because I was focusing so much on my running...and I just wanted to focus on that. Now, however, I am seeing the repercussions of me not lifting and its abysmal:-(

2. Run three to four times a week - which means only two or three days of spinning and one other day for another activity. I think the other activity will either be the stair mill at the gym - or possibly a spin session on my own time.

3. Start taking yoga/pilates. It's available at my gym. I don't know why I don't take advantage of it. I think it'll help with my core and balance and definitely make my back feel better after runs. I'd also like to be more flexible.

4. All the above being said, I'd like to drop one pant size or 10 lbs - whichever comes first. I've been told that dropping 10 lbs would be too much - but I beg to differ. Ha. Of course - since I don't weigh myself - this could be hard to judge - so I guess I'll be going by pant size:-)

5. I'd like to be able to go atleast four days in a row without missing a day of working out. I now know my body needs at least a day of rest every once in a while - despite knowing I get results from working out every day. However, as I get older, it takes my body longer to recover. So hopefully my workout weeks will look like this - run, spin, stairclimb, spin, run, spin, stairclimb, rest....etc.

6. The final fitness goal I'd like to accomplish is to run a marathon this year. I'm hoping to be able to do it for when it comes time to run the Philly Marathon. This year I ran the Half - so I'm hoping to run the full next November. I think it's a reasonable goal and one that I can handle.

Fitness goals aside - I do have eating goals. One of the things I wanted to do was to be all Organic by the time I'm 28. While I think it's possible...it would require a huge change in my spending habits and I don't think I am ready for that right now - so here's what I hope to accomplish this year:

1. Less carbs - more protein. Being that I'm vegetarian, I always struggle to find enough protein. Of course, carbs are my vice. But since I'm a runner, I need to eat more carbs than the average person - I just need to monitor how much I take in on days I'm not running.

2. Drink less alcohol. When I'm training - I usually don't drink that much. Maybe one glass of wine every friday - but that's about it. I am definitely cutting out beer.

3. No sodas or anything that has sodium in them. I recently read a memoir about a woman who lost lots of weight - and it was on a low sodium diet. I do notice how right after I eat things like chinese food or sushi, I am bloated and feel gross. While I'm not about to give up my once a week sushi - I'm definitely going to work on eating food with less sodium in them.

4. Be more prepared when I go on the road - have foods with me ahead of time. So often I go on the road and there isn't anything for me to eat because everything is so fat laden or has too much sodium or I just don't want it. I need to start bringing food with me so I don't have to worry about feeling crappy if I miss a day of working out.

I'm sure I'll have more fitness/health resolutions as the year goes on...but I think I'm going to start keeping track of my workouts too. I think it'll help me and make me not feel so badly on days where I decide to skip. Today for instance. I skipped working out. I'm always so hard on myself about this stuff. I know that I'm a good person despite how much I weigh...but I'd just like my outsides to match my insides...and that means being 10 pounds lighter and one size smaller.

No more people telling me I "wear my weight well". Bleh.

ETA: I am also going to start taking pictures of the foods I eat - this will help me be accountable of the food I put into my body. Obviously since it is now after dinner - I will be starting this tomorrow - but still - I think it's a good way to hold myself accountable for what I put into my tummy. Then I have no one to blame for lack of weightloss but myself.

A less weighty katie

So I was watching "You Are What You Eat" on BBC America the other week...and there was a girl on there who shared my name and "a less weighty katie" was a tag for a bump out/in of the show. It kind of stuck with me and I've kind of been telling myself this is what I need to do.

I need to stop calling myself fat. I need to focus on what's truly important to me again - which always was - being healthy. I can't let it get out of control. I am healthy and I am fit. I just wish I was a less weighty katie. So. I'm going to do what I can. I'm going to workout hard...eat well...drink less...eat less sweets...and get more sleep! I've found the sleep thing is by far and away the thing that affects me on a more immediate level. If I don't sleep enough the night before, my workouts are as effective the next day and I tend to hurt more (my muscles and joints) during the next few days.

I recently talked to Brian - my old trainer. He basically told me - as long as I'm running - one upper body workout a week should suffice. Which is good because it's what I've been doing anyway. I've cut out leg workouts for now - I've noticed a difference. My legs (my calves anyway) look trimmer. I'm still working on toning up my tummy some more - but cutting out the alcohol has helped in that department significantly. If I do drink - it's usually a glass of wine and only one.

Elsewhere - things are pretty decent. I had a bad day last week - but it was the start of my pmsing - and thankfully that is done now. I am going home this coming weekend for my friend Kristie's wedding - I am so excited for her:-) I'm also gonna get to see my cousins and my friend Pat who I haven't seen in nearly 2 years. Should be interesting.

On other fronts - I head out to LA to visit Kelly at the end of the month and am REALLY excited about this half marathon. I think - and am pretty sure - I am signing up for the Philadelphia Marathon in November. It falls on the Sunday before Thanksgiving and I'll probably be home then anyway - plus Jackie's birthday is the next day so win win:-) But I'm still gonna see how I feel after this half marathon. I know I can do 13.1 ....but 26.2....that's a helluva long way farther...so....we'll see.

yay:-)
